Marketing Your Own Grain vs Hiring an Advisor

You already sell your own grain. The question is whether to keep doing all of it yourself, add a second read of the chart, or build a plan with someone 1-on-1. This page lays out what each option changes, and what it doesn't.

Who this is for

This is for grain farmers and traders in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the US Midwest who already market their own crop. If you are starting from scratch, read Grain Marketing 101 first. Full price cards are on the pricing page, and documented calls are on the case studies page.

Grain Marketing 101

What stays with you

In every option below, you still own the sale, the buyer or elevator, and the decision to act. A report does not place the contract. Consulting does not take the decision away.

Three ways to handle the same crop

Do it yourself. You watch the market, set your targets, and make the call. There is no fee. The cost is time and attention: it is easy to miss a move, hold grain too long waiting for one more rally, or sell because you are tired of watching. If you have the discipline and the hours, keeping the work is a legitimate choice.

Add a report. The Klarenbach Grain Report covers wheat, canola, barley, oats, corn, soybeans, and flax. The Klarenbach Special Crops Report covers peas, lentils, chickpeas, canaryseed, and mustard. Each is a short, crop-specific email built on technical analysis, with a price target and a sell signal. You still pick the buyer and place the sale.

Work 1-on-1. Portfolio Consulting builds a marketing plan around your farm's production costs, risk tolerance, and financial goals, with ongoing support through the season. It is priced by consultation.

If you want a second set of eyes and you will still sell, start with the report that matches the crop. If you want a plan around your own costs, that is consulting. If you want neither, keep marketing the grain yourself.

What a report costs

Each report is $157.50 a month or $1,575 a year (two months free), CAD plus applicable sales tax. The Klarenbach Research Bundle, a full year of both reports, is $2,625. Every subscription starts with a free 30-day trial. If the report isn't a fit, cancel before the trial ends. There are no refunds after the trial.

What you can check

The case studies page documents specific dated calls. The marketing decisions are yours, and positive returns are not guaranteed.

How many farms use an advisor?

In an August 2020 article, James Mintert of Purdue University's Center for Commercial Agriculture reported that just over 2 in 10 farms in the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer survey said they work with a marketing advisor. That was a US survey of crop and livestock operations, not a Prairie grain sample. Mintert also wrote that there is no empirical evidence any individual advisor or firm can consistently identify market tops or bottoms over long periods. That is the right standard to hold any advisor to, including this one.

Questions

Can I keep marketing my own grain if I read a report?

Yes. You still make the sale.

When is a newsletter enough?

When you want a disciplined, chart-based price target and sell signal, and you are comfortable placing the sale yourself. If you want a plan built around your own costs and risk, that is Portfolio Consulting.

Do you guarantee I will beat my own price?

No. Positive returns are not guaranteed.

Where can I see every option?

The pricing page lists both reports, the bundle, and Portfolio Consulting. Publications describes what each report covers.
